What happens in acute liver failure?
Acute liver failure is a deteriorating of liver functions that results in:
- Coagulopathy, usually with an international normalized ratio (INR) of greater than 1.5. Causes: impaired liver protein synthesis.
- Encephalopathy - because of impaired ammonia clearance.
- Hypoglycemia - because of impaired glyconeogenese.
- Jaundice- impaired bilirubin metabolism
- Lactic acidosis - impaired lactate clearance.
- Ascites - impaired albumin synthesis
